For guest David Kvistad, a stay in Milwaukee would be completely out of reach without Kathy’s House.
He’s been here nearly a month, after weeks-long stays in Lacrosse and Madison. The reason is his twenty-six-year-old son, who was seriously injured in an accident and is now a quadriplegic receiving care at Froedtert Bluemound Rehabilitation Hospital.
Without Kathy’s House, David says his son would be going through rehab alone.
“Without this place available, I wouldn’t have been able to stay,” he explains. “The cheapest hotel here is $129 plus parking. For thirty days, that would’ve been $3500 or more. That is night and day difference: Five hundred dollars versus five thousand”
While spending time at the hospital, David has seen many patients going through treatment alone. One man was there for 18 days without a single visitor, even on his birthday.
“I can’t imagine my son going without anyone,” David says. “The hardest thing in your life and you’re going through it alone. That would be very hard.”
More than a place to stay, Kathy’s House has given David the support he needs during a difficult time.
“It’s a great place. It’s a place to feel comforted in a time of need. You don’t have to worry about a lot of things while you are here—the cooking, the cleaning. The household things you need are available. It’s comfortable.”
We’re grateful to the supporters who make it possible for families like the Kvistads to stay together, and who believe, like we do, that no one should have to face a crisis alone.
