After 40 years of marriage, Robert and Jolene Higgins have been through a lot together—but facing cancer was a challenge neither of them anticipated. When Robert was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the couple researched their options and chose Froedtert Hospital, even though the Milwaukee location took them far from their home in Utah.
They were grateful when their team told them about Kathy’s House. “It’s amazing!” Jolene said. “All the amenities are just wonderful and it’s so close to the hospital. It was so much nicer to come here and not go to a hotel.”
Jolene spent many days at the hospital with Robert, and having all the comforts of home nearby made caregiving easier. “I could come over, take a shower, grab a bite to eat, do some laundry. It was very convenient,” she said.
For Robert, what’s mattered most is the sense of security. “I had to get up four and five times a night to walk because of my situation and back pain,” he explained. “We can walk inside the facility, don’t have to worry about going outside.”
We are grateful that guests like Robert and Jolene find the comfort and convenience of Kathy’s House to be a balm during challenging times—a true home away from home.
